The banana goes on sale during the week and is expected to sell for millions of dollars. However, the buyer will be given a “certificate of authenticity” and allowed to exchange the banana and the duct tape.
The seemingly simple artwork “Comedian” was first presented five years ago by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. It consists of a banana taped with duct tape to a white wall.
This week, the work will be sold at the Sotheby’s auction house in New York. It is expected to fetch between 1 and 1.5 million dollars. However, if you buy the work, you will have to replace the banana and the duct tape.
– What you buy when you buy Cattelan’s ‘Comedian’ is not the banana itself, but a certificate of authenticity that grants the owner the permission and authority to reproduce this banana and duct tape on their wall as an original artwork by Maurizio Cattelan, says David Galperin, head of contemporary art at Sotheby’s, according to AP.
When the banana piece was first exhibited in 2019, it was sold in two editions for $120,000. Artist David Datuna chose to pick a banana and eat it, which he called an “artistic act”. Datuna was escorted out of the museum after being scolded and police were deployed around the installation.
When the banana piece was exhibited in South Korea last year, it was eaten by a student, who then put the empty banana peel back against the wall.
