Controversial mermaid statue removed: “Ugly and pornographic”

The debate about how the female body should be portrayed in public art has flared up again in Denmark. The background is authorities’ decision to remove the sculpture Den store havfrue – the large mermaid – from its place in public space after accusations that the statue is pornographic or promotes harmful beauty ideals.

The attention-grabbing sculpture was erected in 2006 at Langelinie Pier in Copenhagen, Denmark, not far from the much more famous statue The Little Mermaid, inspired by H.C. Andersen’s fairy tale.

But Den store havfrue, which measures 4 by 6 meters and weighs 14 tons, was met with early criticism – not least from feminist quarters. In the complaints, the mermaid is described as, among other things, “fake and vulgar”, and it was moved in 2018 to Dragør fortress.

In March this year, the Danish Agency for Palaces and Cultural Properties decided that the statue may no longer stand in public space. The authority believes that the artwork is not compatible with the cultural heritage that The Little Mermaid from 1910 represents.

Art critic Mathias Kryger, working at Danish newspaper Politiken, has described the statue as “ugly and pornographic”. Priest and journalist Sorine Gotfredsen has in turn argued that the sculpture is directly harmful to women’s mental health.

“Erecting a statue of a man’s hot dream of how a woman should look hardly promotes women’s acceptance of their own bodies”, she wrote in a text in Danish newspaper Berlingske.

Artist defends his work

Others, however, oppose the decision to remove the statue, and Berlingske’s debate editor Aminata Corr Thrane wonders if “naked women’s breasts must have a specific academic form and size to be allowed to be shown publicly”.

Corr Thrane notes that Den store havfrue is actually “possibly a little less naked” than its famous counterpart, but adds that she “on the other hand has larger breasts, and that’s probably where the problem lies”.

The sculpture’s creator, artist Peter Bech, is puzzled by the criticism. He defends the work and says that the mermaid’s breasts are “proportional to its scale”. Bech created the statue as a response to recurring comments from tourists that the classic mermaid was too small.

Now he hopes to find a solution for the sculpture to remain in Copenhagen – albeit in a new location.

Swedish minister praises Israel’s destruction of Gaza: “Doing the whole world a service”

The genocide in Gaza

Published today 10:44

Swedish politician Ebba Busch and her party's support for Israel continues to be virtually limitless - despite warnings of ethnic cleansing, genocide and war crimes.
3 minute read

While increasing voices condemn the Israeli invasion of Gaza as an ongoing genocide and Prime Minister Netanyahu openly speaks of occupying the entire area, Swedish Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch chooses instead to praise Israel’s war.

— Israel is doing the whole world a service, she declares, pointing to Hamas as solely responsible for the suffering and destruction in the region.

The statement comes after the Swedish government announced it wants to freeze the EU’s trade agreement with Israel, in an attempt to increase pressure to get humanitarian aid into Gaza. But the decision has met with criticism, particularly from the Christian Democrats – a party that has long acted as one of Israel’s most loyal defenders in Swedish politics, support that seems unaffected by whatever war crimes or crimes against humanity Israel has been accused of.

Busch herself expresses some reservation about the government’s line, arguing that the message was presented in an unbalanced way:

— The focus became one-sided, she claims.

In a Facebook post, the Christian Democrat leader writes that the government’s position may be reconsidered:

“If Israel does more or if it turns out that there is no basis for Israel bearing a great responsibility for the emergency aid not getting through, there is no reason to maintain the government’s position”.

She adds that “it is unambiguous that Hamas bears the great responsibility for the war and the human suffering in Gaza”.

“Need to increase pressure on Hamas”

While Israel’s invasion and bombings have led to tens of thousands of killed women and children, extensive civilian devastation and harsh international condemnations, Busch chooses to fully defend the country’s actions.

— The root of the war we see between Israel and Hamas is precisely Hamas. It was Hamas that started this war with the terrible terrorist act almost two years ago. It is Hamas that chooses to continue holding hostages, it is Hamas that chooses not to sign peace agreements. And we need to increase pressure on Hamas to lay down their weapons, she says.

— Israel is doing the whole world a service in trying to neutralize Hamas and trying to dissolve Hamas.

When asked if she stands behind the government’s message about working to freeze the trade agreement, Busch answers:

— We have opened up for the far-reaching measure of putting higher economic pressure on Israel, if it is the case that Israel is not doing everything within reason’s limits to let humanitarian support through.

Won’t comment on occupation plans

Recently, the Jerusalem Post reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to occupy the entire Gaza Strip. Busch, however, does not want to reveal whether she supports these plans or not.

— I haven’t seen that and then I don’t want to comment on it.

The government’s message has also stirred emotions domestically. The very pro-Israeli Sweden Democrats’ party leader Jimmie Åkesson called the decision a “disaster” in a post on X. Ebba Busch, however, does not want to answer whether the Sweden Democrats can be given influence over foreign policy going forward:

— Now we have the agreement that we have now, she says.

Nordic countries unite on new major aid package for Ukraine

The war in Ukraine

Sweden, Norway and Denmark are joining forces in a new military aid package for Ukraine. Sweden is providing the largest portion of the assistance, which includes air defense systems, anti-tank weapons and ammunition.

In July, Donald Trump and NATO agreed on an aid package for Ukraine – an initiative where the US delivers advanced defense equipment to selected NATO countries, which in turn coordinate and finance further deliveries to Ukraine. So far, about ten NATO countries, including Sweden, have endorsed this arrangement.

Now Sweden, Norway and Denmark have decided to jointly contribute a military aid package totaling $500 million – Sweden’s share amounts to around $275 million.

We welcome the US decision to provide equipment to Ukraine, including ammunition for the Patriot air defense system, and that NATO is coordinating the support. Ukraine has a great need for support from allies and partners to defend itself against Russian aggression, says Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson (Moderate Party) at a press conference.

— Ukraine stands on the front line for our freedom and democracy. Blue-yellow solidarity is therefore the single most important thing right now. We stand by their side for as long as it takes, aid package after aid package – military and humanitarian. Together in NATO, together with Ukraine, we continue to defend freedom, claims Swedish Education and Integration Minister Simona Mohamsson (Liberal Party).

The aid package will include air defense systems, anti-tank weapons and ammunition that will be procured by the US and delivered to Ukraine. Sweden has previously contributed military support worth nearly €8 billion since the war in Ukraine began.

British nationalist leader stopped at Arlanda – alleged to threaten Swedish values

The threat to freedom of speech

Collett was scheduled to speak at a summer party organized by the nationalist association Det Fria Sverige (Free Sweden) in Töreboda, a town in central Sweden.

British nationalist Mark Collett, leader of the organization Patriotic Alternative, was detained by Swedish border police immediately upon arrival at Arlanda Airport near Stockholm on Friday – and subsequently deported.

He was an invited speaker at a summer festival organized by the nationalist association Det fria Sverige (Free Sweden) in Töreboda, central Sweden, but was stopped with the justification that he “poses a threat to public order, society’s structure and the values on which Sweden and Europe are built”.

According to Collett’s own account, he was held at the airport for over 25 hours, without access to luggage or passport, despite not being suspected of any crime.

“After being stranded for more than 25 hours at the airport, two police officers finally came and said it was time to leave. They escorted me to a gate and made sure I boarded a direct flight home”, he writes on Telegram.

He further notes that no EU country would dream of treating an illegal immigrant the way Swedish border police treated him – despite him entering the country completely legally.

The deportation is based on utlänningslagen (Chapter 8, sections 11-12), which gives authorities the right to deny entry to foreigners deemed to pose “a genuine, actual and sufficiently serious threat to a fundamental societal interest”. What this means in practice is very unclear and leaves extensive and arbitrary room for interpretation. Critics argue that the law is used to prevent regime critics and dissidents from entering the country, based on their opinions rather than actual criminality.

Ideologically driven border control

Collett has been a well-known figure in British nationalism for decades, with a clearly immigration-critical and ethno-nationalist agenda. However, it remains unclear how his views that non-European mass immigration is destructive and negative would constitute a threat to Swedish interests. According to critics, the case rather demonstrates ideologically driven border control, where political positions – not actions – determine who is allowed to enter.

There is no criminal investigation or inquiry against Collett, and no information suggests he was planning anything illegal. Yet his mere presence was deemed incompatible with Swedish values – an assessment that was apparently sufficient to detain him and carry out a deportation.

Instead of scrutinizing the border police’s legally questionable actions against regime critics, several Swedish establishment media outlets have seized the opportunity to attack Collett – who is described as, among other things, a dangerous “Nazi”, “white power leader” and “far-right extremist”.

OpenAI opens data center in Norway

The future of AI

In Norway, OpenAI plans to establish one of Europe’s largest AI data centers as part of the global Stargate project. The facility will be built in the northern parts of the country and operated entirely on renewable energy.

Stargate was launched earlier this year as a comprehensive AI initiative with the goal of strengthening the US dominance in artificial intelligence. The project is a collaboration between American OpenAI and Oracle, along with Japanese SoftBank, with the ambition to build a global AI infrastructure at a cost of up to $500 billion over the next four years. This makes Stargate one of the largest technology investments in history.

First in Europe

On Thursday, OpenAI announced that the company plans to open a Stargate-branded data center in Norway. It will be the company’s first European facility of this kind.

The data center will be located in Kvandal, outside Narvik in northern Norway, and built in collaboration with British company Nscale and Norwegian Aker. OpenAI will function as a so-called “off-taker”, meaning the company will purchase capacity from the facility to power its AI services.

Part of the purpose of this project is to partner with OpenAI and leverage European sovereign compute to release additional services and features to the European continent, says Josh Payne, CEO of Nscale, in an interview with CNBC.

Powered by hydroelectric energy

The data center, planned to be completed in 2026, will house up to 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs and have a capacity of 230 megawatts – making it one of the largest AI facilities in Europe. The facility will be operated entirely on so-called “green energy”, made possible by the region’s access to hydroelectric power.

The first phase of the project involves an investment of approximately $2 billion. Nscale and Aker have committed to contributing $1 billion each. The initial capacity is estimated at 20 megawatts, with ambitions to expand significantly in the coming years.
