The leaders of all parties in the center-right coalition are in favor of expanded European nuclear cooperation as the United States reduces its military presence on the continent.
Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson argues that nuclear weapons are “absolutely necessary” today and does not rule out Sweden acquiring its own weapons of mass destruction in the future.
Currently, only France and the UK have nuclear weapons, and French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed a common European nuclear strategy.
In short, the idea is that European nations that already possess nuclear weapons should strengthen and develop their arsenals further with funding and help from other European countries – and in exchange, they should be “protected” by the French and the British. The proposal is justified by the need for Europe to defend itself without US interference.
The leaders of all the governing coalition parties have expressed in more or less explicit terms that a common European nuclear strategy is a good idea – and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has praised Macron’s announcement.
– It’s quite big what they are doing now, they have never opened the French nuclear program to anyone else but France. Everyone knows that the French nuclear weapons are uniquely French. They are not under the broader command of NATO, they are not under American command either, he commented recently.
“Part of the world order we have”
Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Åkesson also welcomes the French proposal – but won’t rule out the possibility of Sweden acquiring its own nuclear weapons.
– We had a lot of expertise in nuclear technology a long time ago. But the political will wanted something else. I think everything should be on the table in this situation, he says in an interview with Stampen-owned GP.
Åkesson is referring to the Swedish nuclear weapons program that was conducted between 1945 and 1972 and which was discontinued for political and economic reasons before any Swedish nuclear weapons were actually produced. However, the SD leader clarifies that he “doesn’t know if Sweden is best suited to build nuclear weapons” at the moment.
– But nuclear weapons are part of the world order we have. It is the reason why we still have a balance in the West against Russia, not least. They are absolutely necessary, he says.
– The discussion now is more about whether France should expand its umbrella. That’s probably a more reasonable path in that case, he adds.
Today, there are estimated to be nine nuclear powers in the world – the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel. Together, they are estimated to possess around 12,000 nuclear warheads, of which more than 10,000 belong to the US and Russia.
