US President Donald Trump confirms that deliveries of heavy MK84 bombs to Israel, previously halted by the Biden administration in May 2024 following international criticism of the massive bombing campaign in Gaza, will resume.
The powerful MK84 bombs weigh 900 kilograms each and have the potential to cause enormous destruction. The bombs have previously been used by Israel in other conflicts, but the new delivery means that the bombs could be used in future military operations.
According to Reuters, US officials confirm that the embargo on these bombs was lifted in January and that Israel now has access to a significant quantity of US heavy bombs, as confirmed by Israeli officials.
– The munitions shipment that arrived in Israel tonight, released by the Trump administration, represents a significant asset for the Air Force and the IDF and serves as further evidence of the strong alliance between Israel and the United States, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said late Saturday.
Trump: “Peace through strength”
At a press conference on Sunday, Donald Trump officially announced that he was lifting the embargo imposed by the previous Biden administration on the export of MK84 bombs to Israel, even as a ceasefire agreement is in place.
– They contracted for the weapons a long time ago with the Biden administration, and then Biden wouldn’t deliver the weapons. But I look at it differently. I say, ‘peace through strength’. They were sitting there. Nobody knew what to do with them. They bought them, Donald Trump told reporters on the ground.
The MK84 bombs now being delivered to Israel have been the subject of political debate in the US, where critics say they increase the risk of further violence. Arms deliveries to Israel have long been controversial, as they have often been met with international criticism and concerns about the humanitarian consequences.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the bombs are intended to strengthen the country’s defenses and give Israeli forces an operational advantage in case of escalation.
