During a press conference, Donald Trump confirmed that he does not rule out using either economic or military pressure to seize the Danish territory of Greenland and the important Panama Canal.
– We need them for economic security, so I can’t rule out that we will do something, Trump stated.
When asked directly by a journalist if the president-elect would rule out using economic or military pressure on Panama and Denmark to enforce his demands, Trump answered flatly “no“.
Reporter: Can you assure the world that as you try to get control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, that you won’t use military or economic coercion?

He also recently declared that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States – to which outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded on the X platform with the comment “no way in hell“.
The suggestion that Canada should give up its sovereignty and submit to US sovereignty has been interpreted by many as a joke or “trolling” – while the demands on the Panama Canal and Greenland appear to be genuine and serious.
According to Trump, the US needs to control Greenland both to protect US interests, but also to “protect the free world“, and he further claims that “people don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right” to the territory.
Interpreted as a threat
The outspoken president has tried to buy the world’s largest island before – and when Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected the offer, he responded by canceling a planned state visit.
In other news, Donald Trump wants the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America – claiming it is a “beautiful and fitting name“.
It is worth noting that Canada, Denmark and Panama are all close allies of the United States in various ways, and that Denmark and Canada are both members of the US-led NATO military alliance, whose main purpose is supposedly to support and protect each other militarily.
Although Trump is cryptic and does not want to explain how he intends to take control of the territories, the remarks have been interpreted by many as a threat, which is why several European leaders have also announced that they will not tolerate a US takeover of Greenland.
