Interim Prime Minister Mohamed al-Bashir is calling on millions of Syrian migrants around the world to return home now and help rebuild their country.
– We need to rebuild our country, and we need everyone’s help, he pleads.
With the overthrow of Assad, Islamists took power in Syria, which has also led to widespread fears of violence and pogroms against the country’s non-Muslim minorities. However, the Prime Minister assures that the new regime with strong links to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State can guarantee “the rights of all people and all sects”.
Now is finally the time for the Syrians of the world to come back home and help rebuild, he said.
– My appeal goes out to all Syrians abroad: Syria is now a free country that has regained its pride and dignity. Come back.
Mr. al-Bashir claims that his top priority right now is to restore security and stability in the country so that returning Syrians can “resume their normal lives”, adding that food, water and electricity will be available to all in the future.
200,000 Syrians in Sweden
Syrian refugees have already started returning from Turkey and other neighboring countries, but it is not yet clear what will happen to the very large number of Syrians in Europe.
There are around 200,000 Syrians in Sweden, of which around 36,000 have residence permits. When the Islamists seized power in Syria, thousands of Syrian migrants took to the streets of Sweden to celebrate, but it remains to be seen whether they also intend to leave Sweden now.
The leader of the Sweden Democrats, Jimmie Åkesson, recently called on those Syrians who rejoiced in the Islamist takeover to go back home to Syria, with the party’s spokesperson on migration policy noting that “refugee status is by nature temporary” and that “there are a lot of people in Sweden who are destructive Islamists”.
