Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán strongly criticized the summit of European leaders held in London at the weekend, which decided to continue supporting Ukraine militarily in its war against Russia.
Orbán warned that the decision was “dangerous” and said that Europe should work towards a lasting peace instead of prolonging the war.
“European leaders decided in London today that they want to go on with the war instead of opting for peace. They decided that Ukraine must continue the war. This is bad, dangerous and mistaken. Hungary remains on the side of peace”, writes Hungary’s leader on X.

This is bad, dangerous and mistaken. Hungary remains on the side of peace. Ceterum censeo.

Viktor Orbán was not invited to the meeting, which was attended by representatives from Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Finland, France, the Czech Republic and Sweden, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Council President Antonio Costa and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj also attended.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó clarified that the country declined an invitation on the grounds that only advocates of continued conflict were present. Instead, Hungary supports negotiations with Russia and the United States in the hope that these can lead to a peaceful solution.
After the meeting, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that European countries plan to secure long-term military supplies to Ukraine, even after the conflict ends. EU leader Ursula von der Leyen also stressed the need to continue military support:
– We need comprehensive security guarantees… Basically turning Ukraine into a steel porcupine that is indigestible for potential invaders, she wrote.
More Swedish arms deliveries expected
Swedish officials have also announced that support for Kiev will continue – and intensify.
– We are one of the largest donors to Ukraine and we will support as much as we can, says Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) and says that it is important that both military and humanitarian Swedish support continues.
– One aspect is to contribute to Ukraine’s defense and humanitarian efforts to the best of our ability, and we are doing that. We have presented the largest military aid package ever, and we are already working on the next one.
– The other aspect is to persuade our partners, in Europe and around the world, to also support Ukraine here and now. Not to wait and see, not to hesitate based on what the U.S. will do, but to act now because the future is being decided at this very moment. More nations must step up and do more, she argues.
