More than half of young women in Sweden say they would rather give up sex than their mobile phone, according to a new survey by Swappie. The figure is slightly lower for men.
According to the survey, 59% of women ages 18-24 say they would rather give up sex for a month than give up their smartphone for a week. For women in general, the figure is 53%, while 34% of men say they would give up sex for a month to use their mobile phone.
– The fact that Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with smartphones is likely to have had an impact on the relationship young people have with their mobile phones, and this is reflected in our research. The fact that there is such a big difference between men and women is also surprising – according to the survey, age is also a differentiating factor, with older people preferring to give up their mobile phone than sex and vice versa, says Karin Armgarth, Head of Sweden at Swappie, in a press release.
According to the survey, 35% of women use their mobile phones between four and eight hours a day, compared to 22% of men. However, men are more likely than women to take their mobile phones to the toilet, with 44% and 38% respectively choosing to do so. On the other hand, women are more active in trying to reduce their screen time, with 48% saying they have tried. The figure for men is 34%.
About one in four people who have tried to reduce their screen time say they have been unsuccessful.
