Northvolt is facing major challenges after several leaks of toxic chemicals from its battery factory in Skellefteå, Sweden. The leaks have raised serious concerns about both the working environment and the safety of the surrounding areas.
Nortvolt’s factories, and in particular the factory in Skellefteå, have reportedly been struggling to cope with the cold and some problematic production conditions, leading to the spread of hazardous chemicals in the factory.
The chemical NMP, a solvent used in battery manufacturing, has repeatedly leaked from pipes designed to handle and store the substance. It is toxic and can cause corrosion, respiratory damage and possibly even birth defects.
According to several employees, the problems are widespread, with equipment described as poor and production is close to breaking point.
The cooling system is criticized for not working properly at low temperatures, with several workers also agreeing on shortcomings and warning that the “lousy Chinese machines” are not up to scratch.
The leaks are linked to shortcomings in the factory equipment, where the systems could not withstand the harsh weather conditions. Northvolt has not yet issued a full account of the incidents, but responsible authorities are investigating the situation.

Management accused of nonchalance
The problems have greatly affected production and created increasing concern among employees. Several reports from business magazine Affärsvärlden suggest that staff have repeatedly warned about the use of faulty machinery, without receiving any noticeable response from management.
As the company continues to expand, there is growing concern about the working environment and the long-term consequences for the business.
The recurring breakdowns risk further exacerbating the situation and threaten to jeopardize Northvolt’s ambitious expansion plans.
