Minister of Education Lotta Edholm (L) was mayor of Stockholm in 2012 when a decision was made to invest heavily in tablet computers for schoolchildren. She now admits that the initiative was “completely wrong” and says a “complete turnaround” is needed in Swedish schools.
In 2012, when Lotta Edholm was mayor of Stockholm, a decision was made to purchase tablets for primary school pupils. Around 2000 tablets were purchased for third graders. Since then, billions have been invested in schools on tablets and other digital equipment. Edholm believes that the investment she was involved in was “completely wrong”.
– We have introduced a lot of technology at very young ages and now we are paying the price, she says in the tax-funded SVT program Aktuellt.
The Swedish PISA results clearly show that the performance of Swedish 15-year-olds has dropped significantly in school, which coincides with the increased digitization. A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) suggests that mobile phones are responsible for some of the deterioration in school results.
Edholm believes that a “complete turnaround” is now needed in Swedish schools and that digital tools instead risk negatively affecting students’ learning. She has previously called the digitalization of schools an experiment, something she now admits she was part of.
– I was definitely part of the experiment, just like so many others. But today, there’s much to suggest that we need to take a step back, especially for the younger children, who I am concerned about.
