Several Swedish football clubs are experiencing an increasingly worrying presence of criminal gangs networks around youth training sessions, where attempts to recruit children into crime and drug dealing are now openly taking place.
A survey of 50 clubs carried out by tax-funded Swedish Radio P4 and Radiosporten shows that the problem is widespread in several cities, including Malmö and Gothenburg.
Masthuggets BK in Gothenburg, among others, has sent out warning letters to parents.
– We have troublesome teenagers who are disrupting training sessions and threatening our children and teenagers. There have even been death threats, says club president Mikael Westerlind.
In Malmö, coaches are constantly having to turn away individuals trying to get in touch with the youngsters. The problems are described as so serious that some clubs have had to take concrete measures to protect their young players. The presence of criminal recruiters has caused concern among parents and club leaders alike, and further measures are now being discussed to try to counter the trend.
Mikael Westerlind is deeply concerned about the developing trend.
– There is reason for parents to be vigilant about their children if they receive enquiries from these people, he adds.
