In the past week, at least four Tesla cars have been set on fire in the Gothenburg area, and the police believe that all the fires were arson.
As recently as during the night to Saturday, the police received an emergency call reporting that someone had set fire to a parked Tesla in a parking garage in Lorensberg – the same location where another car of the same brand was targeted earlier in the week.
Tesla cars have also been set on fire in Hisingen and Majorna, but why the perpetrator or perpetrators choose to destroy the cars and have targeted this particular brand is still unclear.
– We believe that all the fires are arson. Last night we found objects at the scene that make us pretty sure that the fire is arson, says Thomas Fuxborg, police spokesman to the state television SVT.
– We are working very broadly and looking at whether there is a connection. But only the perpetrator knows what the motive is, he continues.
Owned by Elon Musk
The car site Carup reports that a suspected offender was already arrested on Thursday – but was released the next day. Shortly afterwards, two more arson attacks were carried out against Tesla cars.
– We don’t know if there is any connection with the suspect who was released. We are of course investigating a connection between the fires. But it is unclear who or who is behind the fires, claims Fuxborg.
It can be noted that the carmaker’s CEO and co-founder is the outspoken and controversial multi-billionaire and Trump advisor Elon Musk. In Sweden, Tesla is also involved in a protracted conflict with the Swedish trade unions because the car manufacturer has refused to sign collective agreements.
