30-year-old Pontus Sevius died after receiving Moderna’s Covid vaccine in February 2022. The Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (IVO) is now criticizing the Värmland region for the vaccination error.
In the fall of 2021, the Swedish Public Health Agency found that Moderna’s covid vaccine Spikevax increased the risk of heart muscle inflammation and pericarditis in people born in 1991 or later, especially in boys and young men. As a result, the agency recommended that it not be used by these age groups.
Despite this, Pontus was given Moderna’s covid-19 vaccine and shortly afterwards the 30-year-old collapsed in the street and died. His wife, Michaela Olofsson, fought for Pontus’ cause of death to be determined, and Kammarkollegiet, the agency that acts as the government’s insurance company, eventually confirmed that Pontus’ death was “due to Moderna’s covid-19 vaccine”. His partner and daughter received SEK 30,000 (€2 600) each as compensation for grief and loss.
Healthcare provider’s responsibility
Ivo has now chosen to criticize the Värmland region for Pontus’ incorrect vaccination. He found that the region had failed to ensure that the staff who carried out the vaccination had the right information or the right skills.
– In his decision, Ivo has made it clear that this is not about the efforts of individuals, but about the systematic work of health care providers to ensure that the right information reaches staff. I am convinced that our decision will contribute to the continued quality work in the region, so that this does not risk happening again, says Daniel Lilja, head of department at Ivo, in a statement, according to NWT.
His partner Michaela and her mother have filed a police report regarding Pontus’ death, and a preliminary investigation was opened earlier this year.
