At least 16 people died in the Philippines when Yagi struck earlier this week – and another 20 are reported missing.
At least two more people died and 800,000 homes were left without power when the cyclone passed over the Chinese island of Hainan on Friday.
The storm hit Hainan, a popular tourist destination, with winds of more than 200km/h, the strongest ever recorded by Chinese officials.
It weakened slightly during the night and moved towards Vietnam, where authorities described it as “one of the strongest typhoons to hit the region in the past decade”.
The cyclone also caused extreme disruption to air travel, with more than 1,000 flights canceled. For the first time ever, the Hong Kong stock exchange was also closed due to a typhoon, Bloomberg reports.
