About half of Swedes think they will get divorced at least once in their lives, according to a Sifo survey by Familjens Jurist. At the same time, fewer Swedes are choosing to marry at all.
In the survey of 1,000 people aged between 18 and 84 between 23 and 29 July 2024, 47% said they thought they would end at least one marriage in their lifetime. At the same time, 54% said they did not feel legally prepared for divorce, with many saying they did not know what a division of property might look like or the legal difference between being a cohabitant and a spouse.
– If you do not address these issues in advance, it can be a real bombshell when it happens. You are suddenly faced with difficult decisions and conflicts that could have been avoided with better preparation and open dialogue beforehand, says Pierre Kryhl, a lawyer at Familjens Jurist, in a press release.
Statistics from the swedish statistical authority (SCB) also shows that the number of divorces in Sweden has decreased. In 2023, for example, 21,231 divorces were registered, which is the lowest number since 2005. At the same time, the number of couples getting married is also falling. Apart from 2020 and 2021, when the number of marriages fell as a result of the coronavirus crisis, the number of marriages in 2023 was the lowest in 20 years.
